Preface
Parts of the " preface " in the book
Everett Kennedy Brown
" " This collection of writings, ” Lafcadio in Japan Code: Seeking a Lost Spiritual Period...", is created to celebrate Lafcadio Hearn's life and legacy. Many people think of Zen when they think of Japanese spirituality. However, surprisingly we don't hear much about other aspects of Japanese spirituality, such as Shinto and Shugendo, a once popular mountain worship faith.
On the other hand, now, the world is rapidly transforming into a new era. Japan is also experiencing a cultural revival. There is a growing interest in the ancient Jomon culture (c 14,000-1,000 BCE).
This book is part of this cultural revival we are seeing ......
One of the earliest Western writers to explore the "deep Japan" beyond Zen Buddhism was the 19th century writer and journalist, Lafcadio Hearn. Hearn's writings continue to inspire us. They help us to be more aware of the non-linear dimensions of Japanese reality that has inspired so much of the Japanese culture that the world has come to love. This collection of creativity, assembled in this book by Masashi Nakamura and an international team of collaborators, is a testament to this heritage.....
Looking at this collection of creativity in the pages of "Lafcadio in Japan Code: Seeking a Lost Spiritual Period...," we can begin to feel the emergence of these waters of new Japanese cultural revival.
"Culture is like an eternally flowing river. It may go underground, unseen for some generations, but in another time its water's will again flow up into our lives" by an Indian classical dance master." "
Book Review and comments
As a long time Japan resident I feel and experience the country through my heart by being immersed in Japan’s spiritual and cultural traditions. This means using all the senses to create my experience. In my own writings, I have noted a similarity in my ways of perception with that of renowned Japanophile Lafcadio Hearn (b.1850 – d.1904), who lived in Japan from 1890 until his death, taking the Japanese name Koizumi Yakumo : (Little Spring Eight Clouds), and to whose memory and being this book is dedicated marking “The 170th anniversary of Lafcadio Hearn's birth.”
The book Lafcadio in Japan Code – Seeking a Lost Spiritual Period brings together a wonderful collaborative study with references to the roots of basic Japanese spiritual and cultural thoughts, written my Mr. Nakamura.
Part 1 is filled with Nakamura’s interesting explanations of Japanese gods and spiritual and cultural concepts, including their names in English, Romanized Japanese, and Kanji, which is very helpful.
Even though I have been in Japan 40 years
I found myself saying, how interesting, I didn’t know that !
For example, reading from explanations of the Kojiki (The Chronicles of Ancient Japan), finding 青人草 ao-hito-kusa “Green-human-grass”, somehow tickled my spirit, and offered a confirmation of my own personal connection with Nature. (P4)
Other phrases that stand out and caused me to write notes included this on Zen: “clean heart of ‘nature’ on the ‘selflessness’, …that is ‘the sense of being a part of nature’ [and] … spirituality of feeling…” (P11). Without these concepts my own experience of Japan would not be what it is today.
Another favorite passage describes “Invisible Existence” and how “society approaches them [ghosts] during times of social upheaval” (P22). Though perhaps my interpretation, what I call “Being Invisible”, is slightly different, I feel validated to see it expressed in a discussion of Japanese spirituality. And we certainly have some ghosts approaching us during these pandemic times.
One section offers one of the simplest and easiest to understand explanations of the Jizo Bodhisattva I have had the pleasure to encounter. For example: “Jizō is often syncretized with native Guardian deity, dōsojin 道祖神, and worshiped in the form of a stone statue at the roadside, also as the guardian deity of the border with the other world mountains and village boundaries.” (P25)
Nakamura discusses the Japanese concepts of Giri and Ninjo (social obligation and human feelings) something I have always been interested in and have written about myself. He clearly summarizes its effect on harmony both culturally and spiritually, moving towards “True Harmony” wriiten as 和 Wa in Japanese, a concept now known around the world. (P 33-34)
Part 2 of the book features the winning haiku of the “Lafcadio Hearn English Haiku Competition on the Web 2020” with imaginative haiga drawings by well-known artist and poet Mr. Ion Codescu of Romania. His ink calligraphy and drawings easily create Wa between the words and Mr. Codescu’s interpretive haiga.
Maria Papatzelou from Greece, one of the competition winners, uses her haiku to express feelings about Lafcadio Hearn’s ‘Open Mind’.
open mind comes
eight clouds promise land
time’s journey
She writes in her explanation: “Open Mind is all about finding the hidden connection of the elements of nature and the flow of time. Is about finding and sharing to the world, the Inner Connection of Life itself and our world around us, as one Unity. Is about being connected or, in other words, Being at home, finding our Promised Land.” (P54)
Maritza M. Mejia, from the USA offers another stand out comment regarding Lafcadio Hearn and his life and understanding of Japan: “…a strong man who changed rough winds to calm seas and created his own little spring opening the path from western to eastern myths and tales.” (P56)
They both use well chosen images referencing from Lafcadio Hearn’s adopted Japanese name, Koizumi Yakumo : Little Spring - Eight Clouds.
The various texts about Japanese spirituality, Lafcadio Hearn (his writings and life), the haiku and their explanative mini-essays are balanced out with a variety of artworks that lighten the mood while staying true what editor and coordinator Masashi Nakamura created as theme of the book, “Lafcadio in Japan Code – Seeking a Lost Spiritual Period.”
Rona Conti’s dynamic calligraphy pieces balance well with photographer Everett Brown’s otherworldly Japanese traditional scenes enhanced by the old wet-plate method he uses and with the airy “floating-like” Mythical Kimono pieces by Ms. Maria Papatzelou. These and other intriguing art work by various artists intermingle with the texts. Just when you think you need some time to absorb what you have been reading, they provide visual stimulation between the thought provoking, often poetical, texts. These art works were also part of several exhibitions in 2019.
Following the impressive and nicely illustrated profiles of the contributors comes a “bonus section”, a book within a book, by Ms. Maria Papatzelou, with the enticing title Inner Connections of the Liquid Sky - A Poetic Dialogue Between Philosophy and Mythology in Japan which includes “43 haiku, a mythical poem reference in Kojiki Mythology”.
As Mr. Nakamura says they are “the result Ms. Papatzelou’s inner connections and Empathy with nature and humanity”. (P 115)
One of my favorites :
safe in my hideout
i was spotted instantly
wanting to stay
(P 137)
This haiku relates easily to the idea mentioned previously as “Invisible Existence”. The length and depth of this “book within a book”, Inner Connections of the Liquid Sky, with a myriad of haiku, background explanations, and illustrations deserves its own separate reviews, both those written from an understanding feeling heart to those written by scholarly academics.
In the Epilogue by Mr. Nakamura, I highlighted this passage, which to me sums up the importance of our unity with Nature and Humanity: “It is Inner Connection with nature, that allows us to understand Inner Connections of different beings and values.” (P 238)
As a collaboration among artists and writers with love for Japan, for Nature, and Spirit, this book sets a wonderful example of how we can all share and work together to make a brighter, more empathetic, harmonious world.

International book review
" In a world full of negativity, pragmatism, difficulties in continuing our life projects due to Coronavirus, the book LAFCADIO IN JAPAN CODE seems to me a welcoming island where painters, poets, photographers, calligraphers, writers, designers, illustrators and educators have been invited by Masashi Nakamura in order to seek and find the way to a lost spiritual age, but which can be revitalized through joint efforts, through the sensitivity and creativity of each participant in this spiritual journey that enriches us all. I am so honored to be a part of this project and happy to be together with all the travelers on this spiritual path. "

" I feel more than honored to be apart of the international project celebrating the 170th anniversary of Lafcadio Hearn which was inspired, coordinated, carefully organised and realized by Masashi Nakamura-sama. It is a tremendous privilege to be included among a celestial international board of amazing poets, writers, painters, designers, calligraphers and other educators
in this international cultural synergy.
During this collaboration I felt the connection between delightfully different talented persons across the world, with a sole aim and purpose for culture, peace, beauty, creativity and harmony.
Most importantly, the challenging times of the pandemic crisis did not stop us as we found new ways to overcome the difficulties imposed, by getting more determined continuing our cultural connection through the wonders of Art and History. "

This book uniquely brings together visions of and from Japanese spiritual culture, by incorporating observations of Lafcadio Hearn, haiku and art of Maria Papatzelou, and other international collaboration, with the Japan Code researched by Masashi Nakamura.
The Preface by Everett Kennedy Brown traces the influence of Zen on Westerners as it expands to an extent through Lafcadio Hearn to Shinto and Shugendo mountain asceticism.
The Japan Code aims for a first integration of little-known indigenous religion
with Asian influences on Japan.
This densely packed Code charts the fusion from ancient Japan of kami divinities, ancestral spirits, mountains and other forms of nature, water representing purity, time, place, and harmony.
Exquisite photos connect the project of the book to traditions, events, and temples in Kyoto.

Japanese philosophy, mythology and art lovers alike will fall in love with a unique new e-book
Lafcadio in Japan Code – Seeking A Lost Spiritual Tradition.
This e-book is a pure work of art for many reasons.
Nakamura translated Greek Artist and Poet Maria Papatzelous’s haiku and free verse into ancient Japanese and peppered the book with Japanese myth and philosophy in his charming English that includes Kanji for Japanese language lovers.
Ms. Papatzelous’s first collaborative e-book with Nakamura, The Liquid Sky: Where Art, Haiku and Japanese Myth Connect, collects her artwork that was displayed in conjunction with the exhibition and as visuals for Nakamura’s text on Japanese myth and philosophy.
The e-book’s hearty contents include American Artist Rona Conti‘s Shodo and art, as well as other global artists’ photography, Sumi-ink and calligraphy, storytelling, performance and book donations.
It also contains poets’ winning Haiku that Romanian Artist Ion Codrescu judged and made into Haiga, including my second place Haiku and more.
Venture Culturalist Everett Kennedy Brown’s stunning photographs of kimonos and rituals of Yamabushi alike, fill the 282-page e-book. Brown wrote the preface as well, which, among many things, discusses the popularity of Japanese culture and Zen with the West. .......
Japanese traditional culture and spirit of collaboration that focuses on a peaceful renaissance for humanity is a bright light emerging from a dark cave, heralding in a new era of beautiful harmony.
This pioneering e-book Lafcadio in Japan Code – Seeking A Lost Spiritual Tradition lights the way!

The JAPAN CODE is a monumental philosophical treatise on Japanese spirituality and
natural law. It draws on and integrates 1500 years of Japanese history to
highlight the “sense of being part of nature” as a hallmark of Japanese culture.
The book ‘Lafcadio in Japan Code…Seeking a Lost Spiritual Period…’ was published to celebrate the birth of Lafcadio Hearn in 1850; acknowledge his unparalleled contribution to introducing Japanese spirituality to the wider world; and to use his insights and observations to inspire creativity and reappraise the spiritual dimensions of Japan.
Lafcadio would be proud of the book that bears his name. It is a major collaborative work that includes artists from around the world, including Greece where Lafcadio was born.
The haiku, calligraphy, installations, photographs and images that illustrate the publication are eye-catching, delightful and deeply meaningful. They are accompanied by heart-felt stories about Lafcadio, nature and spiritual and cultural renewal.
For those keen to learn about the genesis of the JAPAN CODE and its connection with Hearn, a detailed and enthusiastic description is provided by the founder Professor Masashi Nakamura. ‘Lafcadio in Japan Code..’ is brimful of ideas, perceptiveness, beauty and respect for the interconnectedness of everything. It is a book that I foresee returning to often.
